WELCOME

Discover the beauty of botanical & coastal bas-relief impressions.  The ephemeral preserved and nature captured in a moment in time.  2D casts are meticulously crafted from plaster of paris, then painted by hand to bring warmth and depth to each individual piece. The essence of nature is encapsulated in each unique casting.  Let my intricate, tactile creations tell your story or preserve that special memory.

Bas-Relief Art

 The Process:

An impression is made from foliage, flowers or beach combing finds, by arranging a composition onto clay then imprinting.  The next stage involves the intricate work of removing the seeds, particles and debris, ensuring the impression in the clay is not disturbed.

A 2D cast is then formed by pouring plaster of paris into a frame, that now sits on top of the imprinted composition.

Once dry the cast is cleaned and tidied up, removing clay and any additional materials remaining. The cast then requires a further 2 weeks drying time to ensure strength and readiness to paint.  The time, process and detail taken in this craft means each piece is a bespoke, one-off creation.

About Me

Hi, I’m Josephine, the artist behind Sentimental Castings.  I have lived my whole life on the south coast of England; home has stretched from Cornwall to East Sussex and I settled in Southsea, Hampshire, with my family 10 years ago.

I’m a mixed media artist and creativity has always been an integral part of my life.  The family business was in sign writing and screen printing, so every holiday while growing up I would help out in the shop.  At college I pursued the art of photography and then in 2004 gained a BA (Hons) Fine Art, from Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Since then, I have achieved 20 years of experience in the NHS, working in rehabilitation and therapy.  In that time, I have received a post graduate diploma in Human Communication and raised my family.

At the end of 2020 I enrolled in a 3D casting course in Dorset, learning to produce treasured keepsakes for families and loved ones.

In 2023, I wanted to develop my casting skills and combine it with what I’m truly inspired by; the beautiful nature and coastline of the south of England. I taught myself the art of 2D casting and I have been learning and developing my technique and style ever since.

My art has always been about hidden beauty and the ritualistic process; the making and the journey are as important as the finished piece.  My botanical and coastal bas reliefs preserve the ephemeral and captures nature in a moment in time.
